Hello all, I have a new to me 1999 mercury 175 carb. I am having issues where it randomly dies ( instantly like turning off the key) , but will restart instantly with no effort (one key crank) then work great again until it randomly dies again. I have been trouble shooting with factory manual. This always seems to happen either at idle in neutral or in gear at idle. No problems or hesitations at part or wot. Here's what I've done so far.
Carb rebuild
Synch carbs, butterfly Fully closed at idle
Rebuilt fuel pump
Checked timing at idle (within spec)
Seems to have spark on all cylinders. ( I'm wondering if it's not intermittent, but I wouldn't think one dropped coil would instantly kill the motor, and then be able to instantly restart.)
Any ideas would be great, I'm new to the large outboard game.
I've read about idle electric boxes that adjust timing at idle? Could this be malfunctioning? Or is some other electric system grounding out killing all spark instantly?
Does any one have any ideas? Thanks!
