Mercury 1971 Thunderbolt 9.8hp shuts off when run wide open

I have a Mercury 9.8hp 1971 Thunderbolt. When I run it wide open it shuts off immediately. It idles fine but when I give it gas it hesitates then powers up but dies when wide open. <br /><br />Any suggestions?<br /><br />Also, what parts would I need to convert it to an electric start.<br /><br />Thanks!!!
