I have a barefoot sanger with a 1992 200 hp 2.5 xri I bought it in an estate sale, gas tanks really bad,sat for 3 years. Removed them and cleaned them, but every now and then after running all day barefooting engine wont get up the rpm's, and it will rev up in nuetral but wont go under a load.
I keep changing all the filters and still looks like varnish flakes every now and then in the inline fuel filters, compression is good, good spark, has anybody ever heard of chainging out the little filters on the actual fuel injectors?
I have looked for the inline filter between the fuel pump and the pressure regulator and dont see one.

any suggestions?

You might try some carb/fuel injector cleaner and if that don't work take it to a good dealer if you keep running lean you will damage the engine and it will end up at a dealers with a even larger repair bill

Re: mercury 1992 200hp fuel starving under load

Dealer is baffled, no clue, took it out the other day and it ran fine, no problems, then 2 days later, ran fine for 2 hours then, starving for fuel,
headed back to the marina, slow, then about half way back, it started to kick in and it ran fine again, ran fine for another hour then, back to starving for fuel, then it was time to call it a day.
checked both in line filters, (clean), spin on filter( clean)
put it in nuetral, it can rev up to red line, but put a load on it, and no go,
just about 2000 rpm's, is their a filter screen at the fuel injectors?

help any suggestions Skigolfnut

You really need to clean the vapor separator if this engine has set this long. The separator has a needle, seat & float inside it controling inlet fuel from square low pressure fuel pump. Electric fuel pump also has a filter on the bottom of it. Fuel to injectors are are filtered once in round filter above pump and at the injector itself. The filters in the injectors are replaceable but need to be cleaned and flowed. Do not even try to clean this with a additive such as Quickleen or Seafoam and others, as they will not remove debris from filters because debris cannot be broken down small enough. If it is injectors send to Brucato. Cleaned, new filters and matched flowed for under $ 180.00 unless you have a bad one.

Thanks,
I have done all the above from day 1 when I took over the boat, I finally removed the saddle tanks and cleaned all the varnish flakes off of the walls, no wonder my inline filters looked like crud after a couple of outings, I am going to take a look at that vapor seperator needle float valve again, I am thinking that a couple of big chips keep circulating around and around in the fuel management system and catching on the float valve from time to time.

Are you positive it is a fuel issue?
I've had 2.5s that will run great at idle and rev-up in neutral.
Only to find a bad switchbox on the ign side of things.
When a box fails the engine loses 1 bank of cylinders.
It will start and idle and rev in neutral, but when you go to throttle up
it just bogs down.
Just a thought!
Good luck.

THANKS,
how do I check for that? I have a mercury mechinic I can call, I just figured it was a fuel issue, because heading back to the marina at 2000 rpm and boat will not get on plane, then all of a sudden, it kiks in and runs fine for a while, then after slowing down for a no wake zone, it is back to no power. never thought it could have been anything else.

thanks, again,

You really do need to tap into the fuel system to monitor fuel pressure during the faulty performance.

These injection pumps do act strange as they begin to die, still running but intermittantly failing to provide adequate pressure for full performance.

thanks,
I am going to take a timing light with me to the lake, and when it acts up again, I am going to check each plug wire to see if they are getting spark or not. If they are not getting spark it will point to a weak Stator. if it is getting spark and running slow it is fuel or ecu problems,

Many thanks for everyones help, I will keep yuall posted.

thanks,
