Mercury 2.5 Outboard Engine Starts But Only a Few Times

Hey everyone,

I recently bought a Mercury 2.5hp 4-stroke outboard and have been using it on my Pond Prowler 10. It always starts on the first pull, no problem. The motor runs great when I first launch—smooth, strong, and reliable.

Here's the issue: I’ll run it for about 5 minutes to get to a fishing spot, then shut it off. When I'm ready to move again, I pull the cord and it starts right back up. I go to another spot, shut it down, fish for a while, and when it's time to move again or head home, the motor suddenly won't start. I pull and pull—nothing. Once I get home, I mount it on the motor stand, drop it in a bucket, and like clockwork, it fires up on the first pull again.

This happens every time I go out. The motor runs perfectly and starts easily the first few times, but after that it just refuses to crank on the water. When running there is no sputtering, no rough idling. It will rum a few times, then nothing.

I'm honestly considering selling it since I don’t know much about troubleshooting outboards. But I’d love to fix the issue if possible. Anyone have any insight into what might be going on?

Thanks in advance!
Billy B.

Is the gas vent open?
Oil level? low, good , or over filled?
Yes, oil level good. It does have a plastic external fuel tank that the previous owner put on it. One thing I noticed that sometime when I prime the bulb up to crank the motor, gas will come out of the same place where the water comes out when the motor is running and cooling (Pee Hole). Not sure if that is a problem.Mercury 2.5 Running
