A salesman is trying to pitch to me that the Yamaha and Mercury 225s are identical.
Can anyone tell me the true differences?
What about Cost?
I have not been a Merc fan. But, have heard good things about Yamaha ( ditching my worthless Evinrude)

Re: Mercury 225 VS Yamaha 225 Four Strokes

Hello
well they are not identical
the mercs are black. and has a different shaped hood

other than that a merc dealer friend told me that sales of the f200 and f225 were temporarily suspended by merc. there is a small problem with the idle speed. and there are some recalls for a charging system problem. all f200 and f225 motors from 2002 and 2003 are being sent a throttle bushing kit to correct the idle prob. if you have one and it fails to return to a complete idle you have to shut the engine off to shift
good luck and keep posting.

Rodbolt, so is that problem enough for you to not to recommend the Merc over the Yamaha?

The engines, both made by Yamaha, are identical except for the Cowling and paint job. THe Mercury is quieter because of the cowling that they use.

Re: Mercury 225 VS Yamaha 225 Four Strokes

Hello
both motors are yamaha's one is black and the claim is the black one may be quieter then the silver/blue one. both are excellent engines. I would base any decision about merc/yam f200-225 on where can I get the best service and support after the sale and which dealer has competent service techs. yamaha has sent notices to all registered engine owners. so far none of the 30 some odd we sold have had the idle problem partly because when I mount them or do the initial service I liberally coat the throttle towers bushings and heim joints with fluid film and again at the 10 hour service. some dealers just mount it and send it on its way hoping it will outlast the warrenty period. I worked for a place like that once for about 2 weeks. had to leave. it was his dealership but my reputation.
good luck and keep the research up

Hello
Not all mercs are built by yamaha. as far as I know only the f200 and f225 are made wholey by yamaha. merc makes a 25 fourstroke for yamaha that is merc all the way down to the prestolite ign.
prestolite did not work well in the marine environment.I hope all this alleviates some of your confusion:) :)
Good Luck and keep posting

Merc's 4-stroke 225, 200, 115, 90, 75, 40, and 15 hp are all Yamaha made. Sorry, Merc does not make a 4-stroke 25 for Yamaha.
