Folks,

Have enjoyed the numerous topics and threads. I am a novice at mechanical things but feel the need to at least do some of the basic maintenance on my 1994 Mercury 25 outboard. Hope someone can help.

Replaced the water pump and now there is a grinding sound when the forward and reverse gears are engaged. Appears to run fine once in gear. Any ideas as to how to fix this....as it did not do this before.

Cheers,

VKS :)

Re: Mercury 25 gear grinding

When engaging forward and reverse you will hear quick grind and a clunk. The faster you shift into gear the better. If you slowly shift into gear(granny shifting)you can risk the chanse of rounding the clutch towers on the clutch and gear. It is possible that the clutch is already rounded. Does it fall out of gear for no reason while running?

DTS / Hooty,

Thanks for the suggestions. Will give it a try. I have had the slight grinding during the initial part of the shift before, but this time it is quite pronounced. Will double check and see how it goes.

Cheers,

VKS

DTS,

To answer your question...I have not put it in the water but in the tub the gear gear appears to be holding.

Thanks again.

Hooty and DTS

Just wanted to say thanks for the help. Finally got the boat in the water a couple of times and all appears to be well. I only hear the ginding when I shift with a flush on....but not in the water. Again my thanks.

Cheers,

VKS :)
