no start. getting strong spark to both cylinders. will only hit if hold throttle wide open and use ether removed carb & reed valve & inspected. no trash in carb.shoots good primer shot of fuel when pull choke out. keyway looks good at flywheel. changed plugs . changed fuel. compression is 110 on top cylinder 80 on bottom
i know bottom is low but should this keep it from starting bottom plug seems to be loading more with fuel than top engine was running fine last trip out until i slowed down. didnt wont to idle so i throttled wot & it bogged & hasnt started since model#102557 ser#0b173240 about a 1985 year model 25 horse with jet drive.

Those compression numbers are pretty dismal.Run a leakdown test on this unit and if it fails that as well ,the writing is on the wall. There is no head gasket to blow on this unit.

Re: mercury 25 no start

Thanks for quick reply. would like to add while still on river on day of failure was cranking engine with plugs out & water was shooting out of spark plug holes. was it just sucking back through exhaust? I know how to check leakdown on 4 stroke auto but not on 2 stroke engine. also is there an inspection cover. i have ordered a manual just dont have it yet. Thanks again.

Re: mercury 25 no start

Just FYI...it takes approximately 90 psi to support proper combustion. A good indicator of low compression is hard starting. Might want to rule out everything else but that does not negate the fact you have at least one cylinder not pulling its weight. I would try to de-carbonize it before rebuilding. Always start with the least expensive first.
Dwain

Oops...got ahead of myself. I noticed in your later post about the water coming from the cylinders. Not a good sign.
Dwain

Just tore down engine. found bronze crank thrust sleeve busted to pieces. bores & pistons & even rings look good.Going to attempt overhaul. still would like to know if 75 psi on bottom cylinder was enough to cause engine not to start.
