Mercury 250 lower unit

Just had to replace the entire lower unit on my 1996 motor.<br />Im curious as to how/why lower units break.<br /><br />I ran aground the day before the lower unit bombed out.<br /><br />Any idea if insuranace covers it?<br /><br />thanks

A teardown of the damaged lower unit would be the first thing needed. If the damage was related to the hit that it took (maybe a bearing damaged from the impact) insurance should pay. If the lube was contaminated with water from lack of maintenance you will probably be out of luck.
