regarding a 2001 mercury 25hp outboard

I was cruising near wide open throttle, minding my own business when the engine started revving very high. The engine is running great but no forward or reverse. When running and in gear increasing throttle only revs the engine - no boat locomotion. Hand turning the prop with the boat in forward or reverse gear (but not running) does not turn the engine but does turn the prop shaft. I drained the lower unit oil and it was a bit cloudy but no metal chips. Anything you gentlemen could tell me will be appreciated!

evenin' yellowhusky,

couple of things that you might look at.

First, use a white marker to mark a line in the prop hub and on the prop itself.. Star the motor, put it in gear, then turn the motor off and look at the marks. It sounds like you may have "spun" the hub. if the hub has "spun" the marks will have moved from each other. if this is what happened, you can the the prop "re-hubbed" at a prop shop or through your local marina/boat store.

if that's not the problem, pull the cowel off of the motor and try to engage the shift linkage at the motor. Confirm that the shift lever is actually activating the shift shaft. the linkage have have given up in the control box, or the cable or at the mounts at the motor

Let us know what you find

Good Luck

Seems the drive shaft was sheared. Since there was no impacts to the engine, I am taking a wild shot that Mercury will see fit to at least replace the driveshaft gratis, ha ha good luck right? Meanwhile the summer crab season is moving on without me.

Thanks for your advice.

Yellowhusky

The driveshaft sheared down inside the lower unit housing. ANY THOUGHTS on how to remove it? The bolt is torqued holding the drive gear in the lower unit and I can't sem to hold the broken shaft end so as to remove the bolt and free the shaft end.
