Mercury 25hp outboard - 20 yrs old

I puchased a boat with an Outboard Mercury Motor. Motor says 79. Starter motor says '89. I do not know how to release the locking mechanism that holds the motor in a down position. It appears that there is a rod that goes up into the motor that releases the mechanism but I can't find a release button or know if it's electrical, manual, etc... Can anyone tell me? Or help me obtain an Owner's Manual for the motor? I can't find the motor's serial number - can anyone tell me where to look for it? The starter serial number is 5090983A1 and has the date 4/28/89 on it.<br />Thanks & Happy Holiday!!

Put it in forward gear and the motor will be released.

Model and serial number may appear on the mount<br />clamp if not it may be on a welch plug on the power head.(like a freeze plug)<br /> Grubbs Marine at www.oldmercs.com has reprints<br />of original owners and service manuals.<br /> After market manuals are available at the<br />bottom of this page or napa auto parts,amazon.com<br />ebay etc.
