i have a 1989 maxum, 20 ft, with a mercruiser 3.0 l engine. i would like to swap out the motor, possibly for something larger. my question is, are there any other motors, marine or automotive, that would bolt right up to the motor mounts and the trans without changing anything? if so what are they?

what kind of change has to be made for a different motor? and is there any motors that would be "easier" than others, if so, what?

I repowered from a 3.0 (useless crap IMO) to a small block chevy (alpha one 260hp). Took a half day to make new mounts for the engine (bolted, fiberglassed, etc). <br /><br />wiring same<br />gimbal same<br />fuel same<br />cables same<br /><br />You'll need to adjust your tach from 4 to 8 cyl to read correctly.<br /><br />The 3.0's upper part of the outdrive (gear box) is geared different than the v8's. If you do keep your 3.0 out drive, your prop speed will be a lot less than with the 5.7. You'll prolly want to get a larger prop to compensate. Otherwise you might find the prop spins up too fast, and it would also be possible IMO to overrev the engine if your not careful.<br /><br />-- Joe

Joe, did you keep the 3.0 gears or get the V8 upper gears? Just wondering....

if you like the boat i would get another 3.0 ..you can get them for around 1200-1500 almost ready to go ..you can still use your accessories ..carb, alternator , starter , it might bring the price down a little <br /><br />Dom

dice_gambler....are you still looking to upgrade your engine?...if the old one runs without problems, I would be very interested in it (I have a block crack in mine). Not trying to hijack dice_gambler's thread (didn't make sense to start a new thread on the same topic), but dom, can you email me where (on the 3.0's ready to go).
