Mercury 3.5 running problems

I have a Mercury 3.5 hp (serial # 6626564) outboard the starts fine and runs fine for awhile (20 min) then it will lose power and die. It will start again fine ( one pull)and run for a shorter period of time (say 15 min) then die again . The motor will again start on one pull and keep repeating the process with a shorter runnung time each time till it finally will not start. After the motor cools the whole process starts again. Please Help!!!!!!

when was last time you installed a new impeller?

I just purchased the motor. I have no idea when the last time it was replaced was...

first step on any new motor is new impeller IMO.<br />if stops workin, no coolin water to motor and<br />that ain't good. hope I am wrong and you haven't<br />overheated her, but good place 2 start.<br />I would also test the coil while I was at it.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.
