I just picked up a project boat (86 Bomber duck boat) with an 86 Mercury 35hp outboard. The boat had been sitting up for about a year when I bought it. So far I've rebuilt the carb, changed plugs, new lower oil, new water pump, etc. When I took it out for a water test it ran excellent going between idle speed and half throttle for approx. an hour. On the way back to the ramp I gave it full throttle for about 2 minutes in which it accelerated cleanly and strong but quickly died. I got it restarted but it wouldnt idle clean and with half throttle it only carried idle speed.
When I got it home I checked the plugs which were clean, fuel filters were clean, I checked the settings on the carb and everything seemed fine. So I took it back out and it did the same thing. Ran great and strong idle to half throttle for about a 30 minute run so I tested it at full throttle and it died out again. I decided that it could be the fuel pump so I took it apart and the diaphram does look stretched out so I ordered a diaphram kit to replace it.
What else should I be looking at? As I said the motor is new to me but looks well maintained, Any suggestions are appreciated.
