Mercury 40 2 stroke

I have a mercury 40 hp 2 stroke and when it's running in the idle position there is a grinding noise coming from the shaft. When the engine is in gear it is smooth without the grinding noise. What could this be?

If you move the shift lever just slightly towards fwd. or rev. it will stop clicking when you find out with way that is, remove the cable from the engine and turn the cable barrel to move the cable in the right direction, alway keep track of the number of turns in case you go to far or in the wrong direction
