Mercury 402 thunderbolt year and serial number

I just got a 16 foot skiff with a mercury 402 40 hp thunderbolt on it and was wondering where the serial number was so I can tell the year when ordering parts Thanks in advance!

Sometimes they are on the middle of the bracket facing forward directly under the cowling

I used to have one of those from the 1975 era and its on the motor mounting bracket on the right side if your standing behind the motor, its often covered in grease so you have to look close.

I have the same motor. It's at the front on top of the mounting bracket.

I found it and found out I have a 78 model. Thanks!
