Help here please! I have adjusted the idle screw all the way back to where it is not touching and it still idles WAY too high.

Can I add an "assist spring" to help close the throttle?

This is a 1977 2 stroke.

Thanks.

Remove the throttle cable at the engine. Adjust idle speed. Hold the end of the throttle cable near the linkage pin and adjust the barrel on the cable until the cable end can be slipped on the linkage pin without moving anything.

Re: Mercury 40hp idle WAY too high

Upinsmoke: thanks... after the post I "dug into it"

I was adjusting the timing! I get the moron-of-the month award.

The throttle cable was off about 10 turns and would not close because of it...
I set the timing according to the book by the marks under the flywheel. Would there be any benefit (like a car) to bump the WOT timing up a little? I know nothing about 2 strokes.

Now the idle hums along smoothly, and I can quickly adjust her in the water if it isn't just right. Thanks a lot.
