I just purchased I believe is a 1989 5 HP boat motor on a 12' alumacraft boat. The motor would not start when I bought it, but I know nothing about motors, but I read if I I take apart thr Carb and spray some carb cleaner it could solve it. I did this and it started! But...I can only keep it running if I constantly work the throttle.
It will not idle. Once I get it somewhat low on idle it automatically throttles-up...any help would GREATLY be appreciated.

Regards!

Disconnect fuel line at carb to make sure you are getting gas thru fuel hose. If not, you may have clogged fuel filter or a blocked fuel line. Make sure you have the shutoff valve open. If you are getting fuel flow, you may have a stuck float needle valve in carb.

Also, the fact that you sprayed some carb cleaner in there and it started means the carb were probably gummed up. The spray may have cleaned it enough for starting but not enough for a smooth idle. I would disassemble the carb, soak in carb cleaner, dry and blow out all orfices with compressed air and reassemble with new gaskets.
