I have a merc, 50 hp, thunderbolt, 1982 4 cyl. engine that was run into a sand bank. I changed the water pump immediately afterwards. Now when you run the motor with muffins or in a bucket, the water flow through the pee hole normally, but gets excessivly hot within a few minutes. It eventually turns to steam. Does this indicate exhaust getting into the cooling system. A gasket, cracked cylinder, partially plugged coolant path? Any info would be very helpful.

regards,

1982 ?
Blue band with white "Mercury" text ??
You say you installed new pump. How was the temp before the installation ?
Don't know how much you know about the installation, but would it be possible that you did something wrong ? Merc90hpnewbie, has a long post, which involves a "hands on" water pump job with some great assistance from what you will find to be some great people on this site. You can have a read and jump in. ;)

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=29;t=008642

Yes, blue band with white text. S/N 614***X. I have used this motor in salt water approx. two week/year for several years. I always flush it thouroughly when finished. I purchased this used several years ago and it was used in salt water before i bought it. It was steaming before I replaced the water pump. The water pump replacement went very well(I replace all components with exception of the base). The motor still runs very well. Just hot.

The most common issue, that I have come across on these posts has been "Fragments of old impeller left in cooling system". I have similar motor, a bit older and the telltale and head run very cool. You can put your hand in the stream indefinately. Do a search on overheating related topics for Mercs and see what surfaces..
