I am looking at buying a boat that has a 76 model Mercury 50 hp engine on it. The last time it was ran was in 2000. When attempts were made to start it in 2001 it wouldn't start. I checked for spark yesterday and had no fire. The engine turns freely when engaging starter but does not fire. How do I check to see if the coil pack, etc. is good? What should the cylinder compression be?

Re: Mercury 50 hp

carbs are clogged with gunk, fuel pump diaphrams are cracked or clogged with gunk, filter on engine is clogged with gunk...rebuild then try to start. Change plugs too and check for spark....
