Mercury 500 Gearbox on a Merc 65?

Hi..

I've go an old Mercury Blue Band 500 (50HP, 4Cly). I've just seen a Mercury Blue Band 65Hp (3Cly) for sale with a broken gearbox (Lower Unit).

Can anyone tell me if the perfectly good gearbox from my 50hp will fit on the bigger 65Hp?

I've seen a few Mercury 50HP gearboxes for sale (ebay) and the description says "Fits most 50HP Engines from 1970s/1980s as well as 65 3cyl, 50-70hp 3cyl, 35/40 twin."

Can anyone back this up for me? It's probably true but I would love to get a second opinion.

As long as they are the same shaft length they will interchange but they don't have the same gear ratio.
