I have a 1971 Merv 500 50hp. I can not seem to get it running smooth. I bought a used standard Merv control box and cables and installed them. I can get the motor started but it dies when in gear. When i manage to get it in gear and pull it back to neutral it dies again. When pulling back to neutral i have to pull the lever back farther then neutral to get it to set.then it won't start back up. I can get it to start back up if i re adjust the cables but it seems every time i engage forward and back to neutral it stalls and i have to re adjust the cables. Also i lost a prop nut and ordered a new nut and washer. In the mean time the marina told me to put a nylon lock nut on to hold the prop. After doing so the motor dies when turning and it gets really jerky. Is this cause there's no thrust washer and prop nut? Or could it be something else?
