I aquired an older mercury 500 4cyl. 50hp. From what i can see the distributor cap is cracked and was told it runs great. Anyways the qustion i have is, Does anyone know what the pins on the connector on the side goto and is there a way to bypass everything except battery and starter so i can try and start it without buying the harness for the motor?

Re: Mercury 500

what do you mean pin on the connecter on the side? picture?

yes, but you need jumper cables.

you connect negative to a solid ground on the motor. then positive to the stuf where a wire goes to the starter.

check your compression on the motor

probably will have to replace the water impeller and change the gear oil

what color is your distributor cap? you might have to replace that too.

Re: Mercury 500

Your motor will start (manually or jumped) with the plug unplugged... Disconnect the stator from the rectifier to avoid burning out the rectifier with no battery attached...
