Re: Mercury 50HP EFI

Howdy, MJR.

Two stroke or four stroke?

I am not a Merc fan, but it has nothing to do with the quality of their engines.

If you are thinking 4 stroke, yes, EFI is the way to go. Johnson also offers a 4 stroke 50 EFI.

If you are thinking 2 stroke I recommend that you look closer at 4 strokes.

Good luck. :)

Re: Mercury 50HP EFI

MJR, have had the pleasure of operating a 40 efi 4 stroke this year...the best part is the starting...no drill...tip the motor down and turn the key, two turns around and its running, no stalling, bucking, nothing....the quiet and fuel economy are nice, too...compared to a same hp 2 stroke, they seem to have alot more low rpm power, and soften up at higher speeds...dont get me wrong, they have as much power as a 2 stroke, the perception is different....

Re: Mercury 50HP EFI

I have a 2002 50Hp Mariner EFI, which is a Mercury with different decoration on the hood. It was delivered with a generic Mercury remote control. But you can forget about the neutral speed lever, I've never used it. And you can forget about the choke button. Just turn the key and go. It starts in one second, if it hasn't been used for a week, it may take two seconds, never more, and the response is impressive. And I haven't had a single problem with it during six months' use. How that will be in a couple of years I'm in no position to know, but so far it's flawless. And the cylinder displacement is relatively large compared to other brands, giving good performance on all engine speeds.

Sorry, I can't give you any cons. Only pros. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
