mercury 5hp 1991

has very good spark. not started since 1991.internal gas tank was emtpy but will not start.should i start cleaning the carb?the inside of motor looks brand new.owner said it was run only 1 hr.tank smells clean.

The internal tank may be dry but that doesn't mean there wasn't still fuel and oil in the engine.<br />If there was,after 12 years, the oil is tar and the gas is pure varnish. You need to clean the carbs and maybe mix some stabilizer in your gas to help clean out varnish deposits. After 12 years,it's very possible your fuel system is plugged,something could be frozen, fuel pump diaphram could be rotten, etc.......<br /><br />After you try to start it, pull your plugs and make sure you are getting fuel into the cylinders.If they are dry,it's time to start looking.<br /><br />tom
