Mercury 5Hp 2 stroke

I changed the impeller in my 2003 Mercury 5HP 2 stroke yesterday and the question I have is: is there a rule of thumb for setting the shift rod in the right position as for I never marked the spot before disconnecting it?

I do not know if yours is same as my 15 but once i connect the linkage i check the gears by spinning the prop. If in N prop supposed to be loose and spin both ways. I always test Fwd gear prop supposed to spin counter clock wise and not move clock wise (someone correct me if i'm wrong) and reverse it should not spin in any direction at all. If it does that then i am good. I always tighten the nut in fwd gear
