Recently purchased a 00' Mercury 5hp four stroke. When the previous owner started it up for me it was perfect. When I took it out for the first time I was having trouble getting it started, what am I doing wrong? Not to familar with small four strokes.
I'm mainly going to be using this engine just in case of a brake down. My main engine is a 2 stroke and I also wondered if my 2 stroke does brake down if it would be troublesome for th four stroke to run on 2 stroke fuel for a short distance? I also plan on carrying a gallon of regular fuel just in case this happens but wondered what the two stroke fuel would do to a four stroke.

Re: Mercury 5hp

Get an Owner's Manual, Taylor.

Most 4 strokes will run on 2 stroke premix, but badly and smokily. Doesn't do the internals any good either. If your main engine is oil injected the gas in the tank will work just fine, provided your main engine breakdown is not caused by bad or watery gas.

Get a seperate tank for your kicker and read the Owner's Manual to be sure you are using correct starting procedure.

Good luck. :)
