I have a 2001 Mercury Big Foot 60 Horse outboard on a 27' pontoon boat. I recently purchased this boat and motor. On my first time out the boat ran perfectly for about 25 minutes and then died. The motor would not restart. I replaced the battery before ever going out on the boat and have checked most of the wires for good connections. The starter motor did engage but I had no luck in cranking the motor. The gas is probably a year old. I replaced the bulb before going out also. When trying to crank the exhaust was spitting out gas so I think I'm getting gas to the carb. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

That year old gas could be a problem..what kind of tank do you have? drain the carbs and get a portable tank with fresh gas..pre mix too until your sure the VRO is functional..you might have to purge it. start from there..and hope for the best..

Re: Mercury 60 Horse Big Foot Died

Thank you for the reply. Here is an update. I was able to start the motor the next morning on the first try. I'm now wondering if there is something in the electronics that is getting hot and causing the system to shut down. I also noticed that my volt meter did not go up to 14 volts when the engine cranked. The alternator I suppose. The tachometer was not working the day I ran the boat either. I probably should have included this in my initial post. Thanks for the help.

it is most likely your regulator\rectifier. i just replaced one on my 60 hp bigfoot.it will also fix your tach problem

Thanks for the help. Is there a quick and easy test to run on the regulator/rectifier to see if it is good or not?? Or should I just replace it??
