mercury 60 hp 1992 rev counter

the rev counter has stopped working I have replaced it with a new one and it still does not work. is the problem with the engine and if so what is the problem

rev counter is a Tachometer?<br />it's usually a bad voltage regulator/rectifier.<br />check manual for testing proceedure.

Jim,<br /><br />If your engine has the older style rectifier on it, I would start by checking that. On the starboard side of the engine, in among the electrics, you'll see a diamond shaped boxed, about 1 1/2" long, with a couple of yellow wires on it and a red wire and a grey wire. That's the rectifier. The grey wire is to the tacho. If you don't have a multimeter, take the rectifier off and have an auto electrician check it out.<br /><br />If it is that the part number is -816770 and it'll cost you a whole $35.24 from www.mercruiserparts.com/partsbynumber.asp<br />There's a picture there so you can see what you're looking for.<br /><br />Chris.........

many thanks for the information the engine is a 1992 model the one with the internal oil tank
