Can I use the gray wire on the regulator to connect my tach to since nothing is wired to it?

It's one of the wires coming out of the regulator on the side of the motor.

Looks like this, right?

I also have a gray wire that isn't connected to anything. I also have a gray wire in a harness hidden behind the shifter. I don't know if you have the same thing as me but I am hoping I can use the one by the shifter...

I hope someone can help us :)

That's it. I looked at my shifter and was not wanting to get into that mess.

I also have a purple wire that is not connected to anything and I hope that I can use that one for ignition. It's located to the left of the photo you posted.

I talked to a local Mercury mechanic and he said that those are the wires to use for the tach. Finally an answer.

how are you planning to run those wires thru the cowl to get into the boat?

I have a pontoon which makes it a little easier but I used that plastic wire loom. You can possibly follow the other wires not sure what kind of boat you have. Mine is all wired now, just finish, and tach zeroed out when I turned on the ignition, that's a good sign. I did not start it yet because it's sitting on dry land and ran out of time to connect water to it.
Good luck with yours.

Re: Mercury 60 HP 4 Stroke Regulator/rectifier

i got a bass boat but the wires are all bundled and come out a small hole in the front of the motor. There is just enough space for it to move a little so it won't bind up but I don't think I can pass any more wire along side of it... I will be fine once I get it inside the boat.
