I have a new Merc 60 HP four Stroke. It has five hours since I purchased it from Bass Pro Shops in Vegas.
I was told that it needs "breaking in" for the first ten hours.
I thought Id get the check up at ten hours because it doesnt get much use.
The engine is six months old, I called BPS and was told that the first check is $300. Whow! Do I really need a $300 check up ? Everything is running fine. Only problem I have is the gas gauge never worked but thats not engine related.......
One would think after spending BIG bucks on this engine that the dealer would offer the first check for free......
If I take it to a local shop will my warranty be covered??

Warranty has nothing to do with maintaining the motor....the first check should be more like 20 to 50 hrs anyway....and i do recommend you do that...look at it this way, you'll have had the motor a year by then...300 bucks after a year isn't so bad, most people would have to do it after a month or two... don't know who BPS is but go to another dealer and for a 'check' on a little motor like yours should be less. And the only way it would be covered under the original agreement is if you had thought about it then.

I would think they would fix the gage for free as it's a failure. As for maintenance, see what the warrenty requires (call them or reed the owners manual). My guess is that all that's required is that you change the fluids after 20hrs then every 100 hrs. You should be able to buy the leg/motor oil and filter from MERC. As long as you do the work and keep your materials reciept, I think your covered (but again, check with them.)

FWIW, I'm getting ready to take delivery on a new 30 4stroke( Nissan). I will be maintaining it myself per the owners manual.
