mercury 650 65hp troubles

I dont know the year of this motor but hopefully someone can shine some light on my problem.The motor will start and idle fine until you put it in gear then it will die.This happened 3 times the first day on the water(new boat).After fighting with it for a while it would start up and run great each time.The last time we FINALLY got it going it ran better than it did all day.Someone sugested the fuel pump?Any help would be great and thanks in advance!

I have the same motor and it sounds like your carb screws need to be adjusted, try backinn them out a 1/4 turn it helped with mine somewhat if it makes it better try backing them out in small increments until it straightens out if not carbs may be dirty or it may be pump.
