I have a 1970's 650. I had only a drip from the pee-hole. I replaced the impeller and still the same. the hose to the lower unit is clear and pumps plenty of water if removed on the block end. the pee hole had some trash. It was cleaned out and still the same. Any help on where to go from here would be appreciated
Thanks.

No your engine does not have a thermostat. The early engines like yours pick up the water for the telltale at the bottom of the exhaust cover and will not clean out properly the best solution it to move the pickup point most of those block are taped on the top for a water pressure gauge move the telltale pickup to that plug and cut the old hose as short as possible and plug it.

would there be a pipe plug or something in the top of the block if this is the case?

Yes it should be 1/8 pipe, some did not have one in the top but on the water jacket cover betwen the plugs. The top is the best place as it purges the air out of the block.

the hose to the tell-tale comes out of what the back of what i think is the fuel pump 2 fuel lines connect toward the front and the water hose from the lower unit and the tell-tale hose hooks toward the back

did you mean hook the hose from the lower unit to the top of the block or the hose to the tell-tale?
thanks again

Re: Mercury 650 cooling problems.

Ok, on that engine there is a thermostat and popit valve, they control engine tempiture but have nothing to do with the telltale flow. On that engine the water is pumped up the tube to a chamber that supplies the engine with cooling water through the thermostat and popit bypass and has a hose that come out of the spacer plate that supplies water to the water cooled fuel pump which dumps it over board through the tell tall. Start by pulling the hose off the spacer elbow and start to check flow, there will probably not be any because the plastic elbow that the hose came off of is usually plugged or melted inside remove it and restart if there is water the elbow was the problem if no water take a piece of hard wire and put it in the hole and try to rod it out with the engine at high idle, if that don't work the power head will need to be removed as the adapter plate is plugged or there is a blown gasket. If there is water at the elbow with the hose removed then either the fuel pump is plugged or the 2 hoses. All of this of course is counting on a good pump from the w/pump and remember just blowing air through it proves nothing, it takes water to flush it.

Re: Mercury 650 cooling problems.

i am having simular problem with a 71 650. low pressure out the tell tale, it seems clear, no clogs, but when i removed the lower unit and hook the water hose up to the copper tube going to the power head, the water runs back down from the bottom side of the power head. is all the water from the block supposed to come back down through the exhaust?
