I have two Mercury 650 outboards.
Serial # on Motor "A": 3154237
Serial # on Motor "B": 2992811
I have done research and have found that serial numbers 2803562-3293183 are 1970-71 models.
That same site states that:
2803562-2874263 are 1970
2997339-3293183 are 1971
That means motor "A" is a 1971...but motor "B" doesn't fit into either range. Is it safe to assume that Motor "B" is a 1971 as well?
I would like to use the lower unit from motor "B" on motor "A". There are small physical differences:
1) Motor "A" has what looks to be ventalation slots on the top of the lower unit and "B" doesn't
2) Motor "B'" has an extra bolt by the fin plate that needs to be taken off in order to remove the lower unit that motor "A" does not
They measure the same size, have what appear to be similar shafts and gearing set-ups and have matching spots where the 5 main nuts attach.
Is there anyway I can tell if these are interchangable without having to use the "try and see" method?
The reason for wanting to switch:
Motor "A' has a broken seal in the gears which means oil leaks out and the gear box is full of water as opposed to oil at the end of a fishing trip. The gears have been pulled out by the previous owner who basically rivoted that knotched out screw back into the place due to the fact the threads by the prop are total garbage. If I take the gears out to replace the seal I am pretty sure it will not go back together.
Motor "B" was a nightmare last year trying to get it to run. It runs...kind of...but not smoothly and I have no idea where to go with it from there.
Buying a new lower unit for these motors is next to impossible so I just wanted to exchange lower units seeing as how motor "A" runs great.
Thanks for reading if you are still with me and any information on either confirming the year of motor "B" or if the lower units are interchangable would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
