Hi Folks:

I need to take the lower unit of my 1969 Merc 7-1/2 HP outboard apart in order to repair/replace the drive shaft, which has become pitted. and now leaks oil past the seal. I've been searching here and there for a source and any associated reference numbers for the special tool to remove the bearing carrier retainer nut (if you want to call it that).

So far, I have found links to the lower unit tools for the bigger Merc's, but nothing for that small outboards. I would assume that the tool would be the same for the 4, 7.5 and the 9.8 Merc's, but am not sure.

Any help in finding a source for the special tools would be greatly appreciated. TIA. :)

Ted, some of the tools are listed on Crowley Marine, however all listed as NLA. http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/1921_130.cfm

I checked vintage outboards, and didnt see one there either http://www.vintageoutboard.com/Reproductions/Reproduction-Tools-Publications_1.html

you may have to make up your own or wait and find one on ebay. another idea would be to check the midwest craigslists (Wisconsin, MN, Quad Cities) and get a whole outboard for about $100 and replace your case.
