My Mercury 7.5 Sailpower was working fine until i left it on the back of my boat with the leg in the water overnight. Now when I put it into forward it needs high revs before forward will engage. Reverse still seems ok.

Any suggestions welcome

timsie,Sounds like you may have a spun prop.

thanks for the reply....what is a spun prop? Occasionally it has worked fine. Does this still mean it is the same thing?

Chhers

Tim

I should also add that once forward engages everything is fine. It just takes high revs before it will engage...then it engages with a bit of a sudden clunk.

timsie,While your forward operation problem may still be a spun prop,I'm leaning more toward a problem in your shift linkage since it seems to engage with a "clunk."You'll have to see if you can override the linkage from shift handle straight to the shift shaft. The shift shaft has gear attached to the end that is actuated in a turning motion by a sector(worm)gear on the end of the shift handle shaft. These gears may be worn.If it still won't engage you may have a problem in the lower unit itself.
