I have a 1988 Mercury 70hp which when I got it didn't have any spark in the 3rd cylinder. After a $573 dollar repair, new powerpack, and tune up she ran great for 800 yards, started smoking and shut down. The flywheel will turn 180 degrees and then come to a hard stop. I'm not great with engines but most people have told me that a rod blew. Could this be the problem, or only problem? Is it something worth fixing yourself? COuld I even take on a task like that or should I put her on the EBay list....

Thanks for all your help in advance,
Dave Perkowski

Re: Mercury 70hp

Welcome to iboats.

So who did the work? Are they going to stand by it? Not that I'm saying they did something wrong, but I'm sure they'd have some input as to what went wrong. As far as what happened, I'd have that checked out. It could even be a gearcase problem. Before you ebay it, you'll have to know these and much more. People aren't going to bid unless they know what's wrong with it.

Re: Mercury 70hp

I would say part of a piston broke or you overheated it and part of the sleeve broke and got stuck it happened to me hard to get a new power head or tear it down and have it overhauled
