I have a 1996 mercury 75ELPTO. Sometimes it will start then die shorty afterwards. Sometimes it will run until i shut it off. right now it has died and i've let it sit and have tried to start it twice today with no luck. I removed a spark plug and attempted to check for a spark. i didnt see a spark but i am new to 2-cycle motors and the spark plugs that spark on the top of the piston. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mercury 75 wont start

Welcome bulldozer - All combustion engines need fuel, spark and oxygen to run - be they 2 cycle or 4. So you will need to find out what you do not have.

Try to start it making sure that the squeeze bulb on the fuel line is firm and that you engage the choke. If it does not start, take the plugs out and inspect the ends. They should be wet with unburned fuel.

Ground the plugs to the block. After it gets dark hit the starter and look at the plugs. You should see a bright blue spark. If not you have an electrical problem. Put the plugs back in. take the silencer off of the front of the carbs. Put some premix fuel into a bottle that has a spray squeeze thing (like a windex bottle) and sprey some fuel into the carbs. If it starts then you know you have a problem with fuel delivery.

While you are doing all this buy a manual for your motor and read the troubleshooting stuff. Also helps to get framiliar with the posts on this site and especially the Serch function.
