HI, I'm looking for an assembly dwg. of the lower unit for this motor! any out there?
Also the reason I took it off: It would not go into Drive w/o grinding and clunking shaking the motor violently, worked OK in reverse tried adjusting the shifter cable @ the engine now it did it in fwd. & rev. so I put it back the way it was, bit the bullet and pulled the L/U off (pretty simple) want to disassemble. Finally motor was raised all the way up when I lowered it back down after I removed the L/U a plastic sleeve about 3" long and 1" in dia. fell out onto the ground where and what was this? Does it go over the shifter rod and do you have to index these 2 shafts when reinstalling? ie shoul I manually put the L/U in reverse along with the control and slide up?
Any hep greatly appreciated!

Sorry I cant help with your problem, but:
You should be working with a manual.
They are worth every penny! It will save you
tons of time,aggravation and money.
They are available here,amazon.com,NAPA auto parts,And possibly at the library.
You can get reprint factory owners and ser. manuals at Grubbs Marine. www.oldmercs.com

That plastic sleeve is a guide for the water pump tube. The tube should be put into the powerhead first then the lower unit. Just lines things up.
If you ask nicely I may be able to e-mail you a diagram of the L/U

Hey JB
Thanks and after a little detective work, and reading some other post I went home last night and easily figured out where this tube went. (On top of the waterpump rear of the driveshaft. However it looks like one end has a small chamfer on it does it matter which way goes up? Also please may I have a diagram to add to my knowledge base!! I removed my drian plug nothing but shavings on the magnet (scary) I checked the the tranny. Clunking in forward & reverse. I want to take the unit apart, what's the best way to go about it. Waterpump 1st then prop shaft nut?
