I have a 1989 Mercury 9.8 and it doesn't have the plastic venturi in the throat of the carburetor. The previous owner said he lost it but the motor runs good. I didn't try to run it like this. Now my question is, does it have to be in there? What does it do? And what would my problems be by not having it in? Reason why I ask is, I can't find one. Tried the carb kit and just the venturi and everyone tells me the kit and venturi are discontinued. Thinkin about just lookin for a used carb.

Well I checked all around my area with the number and no one can get. The serial number is A112107 and the carb number is WMB 3. I also checked that BAM site and the part was 3.00 but shipping was 20 bucks and then handling. That's nuts. I have one more place to check. But I doubt it. Thanks for all your help.

Laddies, let me know how you make out. Like I said, nobody my way can fix me up. And I do believe it's a 1985 instead of a 1989. With serial number A112107.

Bearcamp, I just went out to the shop and checked, he!! I have one in stock and I am not a dealer, so I came back in and went to Mercury Parts Express and looked it up by serial number and it says its NLA, so went back to the start and typed in the part number 69764 and they will ship it to aparts express dealer, so I don't see if you give your local dealer the number why he can't order you one. Let me know how it comes out, I intend to ck with a local dealer tomorrow--Bob

Well I already did that yesterday and he said it wasn't available. aybe he wasn't making enough and didn't want to mess with it. Who knows. I even asked him again yesterday afternoon. I think he's giving me a run around. I'll check again tomorrow also. Thanks Bob for your help. What does NLA mean?

Re: Mercury 9.8 Carburetor venturi, Need it or not?

Just curious - back to part of the original question. Would the engine run at all without the plastic venturi? One of the reasons I ask is that when I cleaned and reassembled my carb (74 110) this spring, I accidently broke one of the little wings off the venturi. I was able to JB weld it and the motor's been running fine in the barrel. I also recently ordered a new one just on general principles and will replace the repaired one (had to order some other small parts and gaskets and decided to splurge on another $3!). But, would it work at all w/o the venturi?

Yes it will run, but will preform better with one. Remember if a manufature of anything can save one penny by omitting a part how ever small they would save it and hope for the best--Bob
