I'm loking to buy a mercury 9.8 h.p. The seller told me that is a 1986 motor with thunder bolt ignition. Serial number is 7036297 is it possible to be a 1986? Is there any problem i should know with that kind of motor and year before buying? Can i get parts easilly and affordable? What is the lenght of a short shaft? I have an inflattable 10 feet Quicksilver boat with 16 in. back, do I need short or long shaft.

I get 1974 from that serial number.
9.8hp serial number list.

Test the compression on that engine before you buy it. You want to see no more than a 10% variance between cylinders.
Getting a running test would really tell you what state the engine is in.
Remeber, when buying an older engine, how well it was maintained is the single most important consideration.

OHHHHHHHHHH BABY!
i currently on a merc 110 9.8hp thunderbolt ignition, and shes a good motor, like they said, make sure that its been well tooken care of in the past... the engine is as only as good as the person who took care of it

p.s for their size, those motors really rip along the water, who agrees?

From this site, it looks as though it may be a 1986 Model. Not sure, but it looks like that is close with that serial number. A 1985 Model is Serial number:6620196 Huummm???

web page

Your serial seems to be incorrect..

Doesn't fit a motor nor a part #
