mercury 9.8 impeller

I am going to change the water pump impeller on a 9.8 mercury serial#70970-88.Are there any tips i should know before I start.Thank you in advance.

do you have a manual?<br /><br />i wont even tear into any of my engines with out one.<br /><br />but a tip would be make sure you put the vanes in the right direction, follow the old vains for guidance.<br /><br />while your at it, change the t-stat if your motor is equipped and change lower unit oil. never sieze on the bolts is good since they are under water<br /><br />mike

Tear it down first and measure the shaft with a caliper or micrometer at the impeller spot. There are two different sizes and the serial # does not help- Mercury did not bother to record the different sizes. Without knowing the size dealer can not sell you correct parts.
