I have an chance to buy a '70s model mercury 9.8 hp with electric start. I have not seen the motor yet so I don't have any serial or model numbers yet. The guy that has the motor just traded for it and said he needs to install a new power pack for the electric start. Is this a common problem with these little motors?

Thanks,
Trp251

Re: mercury 9.8 power pack

The power pack is for the ignition system. It shouldn't have anything to do with the starter, whether it's pull or electric start.
So, I'm concerned about what he is telling you.
He may be refering to a solenoid, which is no biggie. Be more inerested in this engine's compression numbers, and the condition of the lower unit (seal-wise).
These are great little motors if they are cared for right. The electronic ignition systems on them are good too, providing, they are not allowed to get too dirty, wet,or hot.

Re: mercury 9.8 power pack

Thanks for the reply 12footer, I may have misunderstood him, He stated that it needed replaced because the preveous owner tried to jump start the electric starter. This is a boat repair shop that has the motor and he said he was going to check the motor out before he sells it, and that I could take it out and try it. I may take it to another source to have it checked out while I have it. How does the mercury compare to the omc motors?

Trp251

Oh..Ok, yes, that can kill those CD packs quickly.
It all depends on who you ask,as to how they stack-up to the Jonyrudes. But I have it's baby brother, the 7.5HP. It is a 78model, and has been rock-solid reliable. It does tend to eat impellers ,but they only cost 10buks for a new one, and only take a hour to install.

I have heard that they tend to run warm and it was recommended to change the water pump or impeller yearly. I'm new to these small motors but most have told me that changing the impeller on a regular basis (yearly) saves alot of headaches. Do these smaller motors have an temp. alarm?

Trp251
