Mercury 9.8 reverse lock cam re-positioning?

How do I reposition my reverse-lock cam on the upper shift shaft? The link rod never goes into the lower part of the cam's groove/channel, so the motor is always locked.

In FWD, the rod sits in the middle of the groove (rather than the "drop-down" end of the channel). In Neutral the rod sits in the left end of the channel (your left as you face it). In reverse, the Rod pops right out of the channel!

Please help, as the Seloc Manual wont cover any of that & I couldn't figure out how to get the shifter linkage of of the top of the upper shift shaft.

Thanks,
Chris

Are you talking about the lower end of the link rod? If so, mine was popped out also on my 7.5 which is essentially the same motor as yours. I had to remove the clip from the top where it connects to the reverse lock "jaws". The clip broke by the way because it was hard and brittle. The bottom of the link rod is hooked like a J right? Once I received the new clip for the top I hooked the bottom back in a clipped the top. Good to go.

Yes, I'm talking about the cam or guide thingy that the "j-hook" of the link rod goes into at the bottom. That cam/guide has a channel that the bottom of rod goes into. Depending on the position of that cam, the shape of its channel makes the rod remain up in the "lock" position (for REV & N) or allows it to drop to the "unlock" position (for FWD).

Someone took this apart in the past (i've had it since last year) and must've installed the upper shaft wrong. It looks like I should be able to disconnect the shift linkage from the upper shaft, rotate the shaft it by one spline (into the proper position), then reinstall the shift linkage. But how do i disconnect that liknage from the upper shaft???

A friend mentioned there may be a set screw, holding the reverse-lock cam in position. I figure it must be splined so that it can act as a coupler between the upper & lower shift shafts. Exploded views in parts catalogs do show a screw & brace but I still can't figure it out as my Seloc wont cover it! Does anyone know this?
