Hi Folks,
I have a 1982 Mercury 9.8 hp outboard motor and in order to start it i must choke it, pull the starter rope a 7-8 times and then it will start and quit. I will have to choke it again and it will start and run fine. I have to do this every time i start it even when it is warm like after i have ran at medium and high speeds for extended periods of time. I have had it tuned up but i was told this is common with this motor. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks,

Bill

Hello Whitebear. Welcome to Iboats. I am from Blaine Minnesota. Practically neighboors.
Check fuel filter and rebuild carburator. Also check choke control to see if it is opening all the way.

I had the same problem and it was a dirty carb. Clean and blow out all the passages put in a new rebuild kit and it should be fine.
