Mercury 9.8 troubles after reassembly HELP!

Took apart my Merc 9.8 outboard for some major overhaul and after reassembly when I shift into reverse, the prop freewheels and neutral it is in gear.<br />I know I screwed up the reassembly of the shifter shafts.<br />Anyone help me with a cure?<br />Thanks for any info!

G'Day. Drop the gearbox and turn the shift shaft to neutral. Make sure the shift lever is in neutral and refit the gearbox. If you still have problems selecting then you have probebly stripped the spline in the upper shift shaft.

The strange thing is that the shifter shafts have a flat index spot and upon reassembling them in neutral the flat spot faces to the rear of the boat but the flat spot in the power head is slightly off. Could I have skipped a tooth in the shifter mechanism in the power head?
