Mercury 9.9 Outboard

Hi,

I just got burned real good. I bought a Mercury 9.9 Longshaft 2 Stroke Outboard from a guy in PA. He said it was an easy conversion to put a tiller handle on it. Of course I believed him. He told me any Merc dealor would convert it from a cable drive to a tiller drive for around $150.00

Come to find out they don't make this handle anymore. I was wondering if someone might know how I can fix this problem? Otherwise I'm stuck with a motor without a tiller.

The seller isn't answering the phone. I picked the motor up at his Fathers house and I see now why he wanted to do it that way.

The serial number of the motor is OA944288.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Would anyone have a motor their parting out that might work on this one?

Thanks,

Moose

Re: Mercury 9.9 Outboard

I'm not sure, that o in the beginning of the serial is throwing me off a little bit, but I believe that it's a 1986 model...? I'm also not sure the tiller arm style from that time frame but it may be similar to the 70's style. I have a tiller arm on ebay for a 20 hp 70's merc that also fit the 9.8 hp merc from the 70's. Does your outboard have the gears right where the tiller would be? also have to openings on both sides of the tiller mount? If so that one might match the one I have listed. Check out ebay and type in 1970 20 hp Mercury Outboard Tiller Arm Handle in the search category. You might be able to tell by checking it out. Otherwise if you keep your eyes open, you might be able to find a newer one if mine doesn't fit. Hope this helps...

Re: Mercury 9.9 Outboard

Thanks. I appreciate the response. I've been calling around the used Mercury parts shops and it looks like I'm up against a big problem. I've discovered the motor is set up for a tiller handle.

The problem is that it needs to be the exact handle to work. That means it needs to be a 1986 handle. One of the mechanics told me these handles came with the engine but they were not made as parts by Mercury. If you lost the original you were out of luck.

So now I'm searching for that handle. Evidently they are quite popular and hard to find. Even if I find one there is no guarantee it will work. The engine has to have the internal components. Forward and reverse are in the handle. But the other linkage and cables are in the motor.

Thanks - Moose

Re: Mercury 9.9 Outboard

Ok, yeah I kind of figured something like that. After a certain point, Mercury switched to forward and reverse tiller arms, as a matter of fact I have a 25hp from the late 70's that has that style. I guess I kind of forgot about that. But like I said, keep your eyes open. Check out auction sites. Also give twincityoutboards.com a try there will be a phone number on the site to place an order, or you can email it. They have like every outboard ever made. I'm sure they would have what you need. They run a little on the spendy side, but when you can't find something, and you have to have it, they have always been reliable. Let me know if you happen to give that a try.

Also, keep this in mind. When I type in that model merc into a parts search find for the tiller, it also shows the same parts for the 6, 8, and 15 hp 1986 Mercs. That to me can only mean that those parts are compatible. That also might open up your search a little better.
