I'm helping a friend with his 1994 Mercury 90 HP on a pontoon boat. A couple weeks ago we took it out for this first time in close to a couple years. It has sat idle since then. After having some problems accelerating, deacelerating, then stalling, we took a look a found a leak in the fuel line (inside the motor). I replaced this hose, as well as the bulb and tank to motor fuel line. It runs smooth now but only ran for about 15 minutes then stalled. After trial and error, we determined that pumping the fuel bulb when it begins to sputter, it runs fine again, but only breifly.

From reading other comments on this forum, I think I'm certain that this is a fuel supply problem.

What should be my next step? The fuel pump? Is it better to replace the fuel pump or just get a rebuild kit?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Mercury 90 HP Stalls

brad, the rebuild kit comes with everything you need for about 11$. It has a schematic diagram as well. When reassembling, remember to keep the points on the housings all pointed in the same direction. There are 2 small plastic seals held in by plastic push-plugs. just push the plastic pin out of the center of the holding stud and reassemble the same way.{carefull, don't loose the small parts}. Then replace the vaccum line from the engine to the pump and ALL fuel carring lines, from the tank, all the way to the carbs. Setting up for a long time is hard on these rubber lines and it does'nt take a lot of pin holes for the bulb to loose its prime. Good luck, and let us know how this turns out. Pat
