Been offered the attached motor that was removed from a boat some time ago due to a gearbox failure - it doesn't come with the removed gearbox. Would the gearbox of my 1981 150V6 fit this newer Mariner 150 Opti? If it does I could get a much newer motor on the water for very little money.. I got the impression these motors are very similar if not the same from a lower unit perspective - anyone got any idea?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The 150 Opti was set up for a 25 inch shaft. You will have to change shift shaft as the 25" is longer than a 20". Also the Opti is a 1.87 ratio and your 150 is a 2:1 ratio. Also I dont think the 1981 gearcase would hold up as its a preload style gearset.

Thanks Faz, I'll pass on this motor - good info - had my Merc out today with a new Quicksilver 21p stainless and it was hauling, think I'll stick with what I have.

Cheers
