I installed the throttle and shift cables on my motor and the first time I took the boat out with the new cables on, the engine seemed to grind a lot more than it did with the old cables on, before it would ever go in gear forward. However it seemed to go in reverse without grinding at all. Does anyone know the distance the shift cable should be. Or how far you should screw in the "nut". It didn't start in gear so i know i have to be close to where it suppose to be. Any help would be appreciated.

On the motor, disconnect the shift cable. Move the linkage and you will find that there is a detent in neutral it wants to rest in. With the control centered in neutral, adjust the shift cable so it drops on without moving the linkage.

Also, adjust the throttle linkage so that at that time the throttle arm is resting against the idle stop with enough pressure to hold a calling card between the stop and the rubber on the adjuster.

Make sure your idle speed is not too high.

Shift smartly, it's not synchronized. A clunk is normal, a grinding noise is not.

There you go.

hope it helps
