I am restoring a 1986 Stratos with a Mercury 150 XR2. Motor hasn't been in the water in several years but I have cranked it. Did a cold compression check and got 103 to 106 in all cylinders. I know the carbs need at least cleaning. My question is, since it has sat for so long, should I do a complete carb rebuild or would a good cleaning suffice. Owner said it ran fine till he parked it. He's a good guy. I have redone water pump, lube, plugs, fuel filter. Any other suggestions?

Re: Mercury Carbs

I would save myself future problems if I were you, and do both. You surely dont want to be stranded on the lake. Also, your compression will go up once you get it running, and get some oil in the cylinders. A decarb wouldnt hurt either. Dont forget the fuel pump.
